What is easier: drive a spaceship or use Waterpik? The answer is not as obvious as you may think. Waterpik water flossers are really useful devices. They improve your oral health and change your life to the better, at least slightly. But the thing with Waterpik is that they are not easy to use. And it’s not only about Waterpik. Other water flossers also are not as easy as advertised as well. So it’s important to know how to use Waterpik.

I often see people tweeting about their frustration with Waterpik, and I understand that. Water flossers are a little bit weird to use. You place the tip in your mouth and turn it on. Then something really loud starts working, and you think it’s the 40-Year old car of your grandpa, but it’s your water flosser.

This thing is really loud. And it doesn’t matter that we live in the 21st century, and drones are flying on the street. Waterpik has a motor and this motor is powerful and loud. And it has to be so.
It generates super high pressured water stream throwing into your mouth. And you have to be a Michael Phelps of water flossing to use this thing properly from the first shot. But in case you are not, let me help you.

I understand your frustration. I was there and had issues with my Waterpik too. But I mastered the water flossing and with all my experience I feel obligated to help you and give some tips on how to use your Waterpik.

Put the tip into your mouth first

The #1 rule when starting using Waterpik is to put the tip in your mouth first. Only then you can turn it on. If you don’t do this, you will probably start shooting the water around, and you will witness how powerful your Waterpik is.

Pick the lowest setting

Using the lowest setting is crucial at the beginning. Low pressure is easier to control. It also doesn’t hurt even when pointed to the sensitive areas like under the tongue. So when you are just starting out, make sure you go with the lowest setting possible.

Then you can gradually increase the setting one by one, day by day, in the span of two weeks.

Use lukewarm water

Lukewarm water doesn’t hurt sensitive teeth. You still can use cold water, but in case you observe some sensitivity I recommend switching to the lukewarm water and not tempt the fortune.

Run water for a few seconds before using Waterpik

When you fill the water reservoir with a lukewarm water and turn on your Waterpik, it will pulsate the cold water first.

The reason is that the cord has some water left after your previous water flossing session, and you have to throw it out until the new lukewarm water comes. So make sure you point the tip down into the sink and run your Waterpik for a few seconds.

Close your lips tightly

The water should freely flow out of your mouth. So don’t hold it in your mouth and let it flow. But keep your lips closed tightly enough to prevent splashing the water.

Suck out the water at the end

When you finished water flossing, and the water reservoir is empty, the cable still has some water left. If you leave the water there, it will cool down, and you will be surprised with a cold water hitting your teeth on the next session. To avoid surprises, I recommend sucking out the water through the tip and spitting it to the sink.

Conclusion

Now you know the secret tips on how to use Waterpik like a ninja. You will become a master of water flossing with those ones under your belt.

I hope this article was useful for you, and it would be cool if you could share it with your friends and bring their flossing skill to the next level.
