It is important to keep your Waterpik nice and clean, so it could work longer and keep your teeth white and your breath fresh. I have been using Waterpik by myself for a 1+ year and prepared some of the tips on the Waterpik maintenance.
Empty the water reservoir
Every time you use your Waterpik, I recommend leaving the water tank empty. Most of the Waterpik models have a valve on the bottom of the water reservoir. The valve holds the water only for a short period of time. And if any water is left in the reservoir it will eventually leak, and you will find the dirty bathroom the next time you come back.
Dry your water reservoir
It is desirable to clean the water reservoir once a week and fully dry it, so it doesn’t collect mold and dust. This will also ensure that the water in the system stays clean and the water flossing doesn’t reintroduce new bacteria to your mouth.
Clean the area under your Waterpik
Your Waterpik may have some wet under it since it sometimes happens that the water sprays around every once in a while. So I recommend to move your Waterpik aside and clean the area under it.
Rinse after the mouthwash
Mouthwash added to the water increases effectiveness of the Waterpik. To keep your Waterpik clean, it would be good to run some water through it after you have finished flossing to ensure, that no mouthwash is left in the system.
Clean with white vinegar
To ensure that your Waterpik stays clean and doesn’t have any mold inside I also recommend running white vinegar through it once a month.
Replace the tips regularly
Waterpik tips need to be replaced every 3 months as it is stated in the user manual. The tips collect bacteria in the same way as regular toothbrushes, so make sure you replace them for the better results.
Keep the hose unstretched
Use a dishwasherTo make your Waterpik maintenance easier, you can use a dishwasher. The water reservoir is a top rack dishwasher safe, so you can safely clean it in a dishwasher.
Just make sure you remove the valve from the bottom of the water reservoir. It’s a little black rubber thing in the water tank, which holds the water in the water reservoir and prevents it from leaking.
Make sure you remove it and then place it back in the right position afterward. It is important to put it back because without the valve your Waterpik will leak immediately when you fill it with water.
Conclusion
Maintaining your Waterpik in a good state is easy. Generally speaking, just keep your Waterpik clean and dry and everything will be fine.
Make sure that you clean it from time to time and that it stays in a dry place. Don’t stretch the cord as well.
Other than that there is nothing more to add. And remember, that, with the proper care, your Waterpik will serve you for a long time. I know people who have their Waterpik for 30+ years, so it’s a very reliable device.
